How to Decorate Your Home in Traditional Style

Published by Erica Pennyfeather on 24th Jun 2019

Ahh, traditional home decor. While sometimes branded old fashioned or overdone, it still carries a special place in our hearts. What are the characteristics of this homey and familiar design style?

◼ Traditional décor has a classic, consistent feel; no unexpected surprises. Inspired by 18’th and 19’th century Europe, traditional décor is big on symmetry and classic arts. Nearly everything in a room is displayed in pairs, from couches and armchairs to sconces and framed paintings.

◼ In traditional living rooms the fireplace mantel serves as the focal point, with decorative trinkets tastefully arranged on top. Sofas feature curved armrests and are usually upholstered in floral fabric or genuine leather.

◼ Heavy curtains, drapes and valances are all significant part of a traditional space, and a classic area rug is a must have. Book collections, decorative throw pillows, and classic lamps help pull the look together.

◼ Walls are either decked out in fine wallpaper or painted in neutral hues. The ceiling is often painted white.

◼ Lest we forget, the chandeliers! In traditional homes, an elaborate chandelier is to be found in every single room.
